The influences on demand are analyzed, mainly health, insurance coverage and income. Doctors' decisions about the price and form of their own services, as well as their advice about other services, are respected. Competition in the markets for medical supplies, specifically in hospital services, is examined. Special attention is paid to the State as a consumer of health services. Changes to Medicare and managed care regulation are among the policy topics that will be addressed. Prerequisite: If the course prerequisite is not met, instructor approval is required.

Special attention is paid to evaluating policy instruments such as government regulation, antitrust laws, "sin taxes" on cigarettes and alcohol, and public health programs. Students taking HCMG 302 may also not take HCMG 202 (ECON 039) for additional credit; Knowledge of calculus and basic microeconomics is recommended.

Recognizing the importance of scarcity and incentives, this course focuses on the critical economics involved in the creation, financing and delivery of efficient and equitable health care. In particular, the course will discuss the tension between cost, access, and quality of care; Analysis of the determinants of the demand for medical attention; discuss the role of health insurance and the complexities that it entails; examine the unique role of physicians in directing and shaping resource allocation in healthcare markets; and analyze competition in medical supply markets, particularly between hospitals. Special attention is paid to the evaluation of policy instruments such as government regulation, antitrust laws, and public health programs. Knowledge of calculus and basic microeconomics is recommended. Students taking HCMG 3220 may not take HCMG 3520 beyond additional credits.

This course focuses on the prominent economic characteristics of healthcare, including: the role of non-profit providers, the impact of regulatory and antitrust activities on hospitals, the degree of substitution of supplies within hospitals , the nature of competition in home health care, public versus private provision of emergency medical services, the impact of specialty hospitals and ambulatory surgical centers, the economics of direct mail and its impact on the safety of drugs, the definition and improvement of medical performance in hospitals, specialization and investment in physical and human capital and the transfer of services between inpatients and outpatients and its impact on the cost and quality of medical care.

  • HCMG8410 - Introduction to Health Management and Economics

    This course provides an introduction to the field of health economics and management. Using an economic approach, the course will provide an overview of the development, structure, and current issues of the healthcare ecosystem. It examines the unique characteristics of healthcare services, products, and markets, with a particular focus on the changing relationships among patients, physicians, hospitals, insurers, employers, communities, and government. Specifically, the course focuses on three main segments of the healthcare industry: payers, providers, and manufacturers. NOTE: This is a required course for Wharton's graduate Health Care Management courses; it is considered an elective for all other Wharton graduate students. It is also open to students in law and nursing schools with a Wharton joint program.

    HCMG 8900-001: This course examines topics related to the healthcare service industry. For those interested in healthcare management, investment, or banking, the service sector is probably the largest and most dynamic sector in all of healthcare. We will examine the key management issues faced by a variety of different healthcare companies, focusing on common challenges related to reimbursement, regulation, margin, growth, and competitive issues. We will look at a number of different companies and sub-sectors that students may not be familiar with before taking the course. We will make extensive use of external speakers, many of whom are true industry leaders across multiple sectors of the healthcare industry. Speakers will address current management issues they face in running their companies, as well as discuss career options and leadership styles that will enable them to reach the top of their profession. Students are asked to develop a plan to acquire and run a specific healthcare company of their choice and present their final plans to a panel of leading private equity investors who will evaluate their analysis.
